Like every year, the courses are about to be over .. and this is the time when it's hot.. hot not only because summer is coming, but also, because this is the time when everybody who graduates, starts thinking seriously about the career.. It's a kind of complete transformation which a person has to go through while jumping into the industry after the college ..
I have been in this so-called software industry, for quite sometime, and i have been noticing things around here.. So, here I am going to share some facts and tips which should be helpful for those who are about to come out of the college in summer 2009..
There are typically three types of people coming out of the college ----
1. Those who are gonna do higher studies (in India/abroad) ---- these people would be wise enough to do their preparations by this time .. and also, they don have to look for job here ..
2. Those who are already placed in some company through On-Campus ..
3. Those who are not placed in any company, and have to look for some job after the degree gets over..
ALREADY PLACED PEOPLE
Recession and economic slowdown has badly affected the market; all the companies are suffering and making out ways to reduce their cost of operation. At such a critical time, you people are gonna enter the market.. You have to consider many things before going forward.. Joining dates, in case of most of the companies, are gonna be late.. So, first thing to decide here is - "whether waiting for your offered company is worth enough? or you should go for some other job? "
There are some big players in the market like TCS, WIPRO, INFOSYS etc. who have got a good record of calling freshers surely and not taking back their offers.. So, those who r there in such big orgs can surely wait for a few months (enjoy and rest at home, EAT well).. You can look for some job, if u can get without any bond, in some small companies or start-ups... Make sure that you are in a condition to walk out anytime... Call centers etc. work well for this type of purpose...
On the other hand, we have some other companies also like US Technologies, L&T Infotech, Keane etc. who don't have a very good track in terms of calling freshers... So, if u r one of these then surely its the time to come in action now.. Its better to look seriously for some other job.. you can get even into a medium-sized company if its good & giving u work .. because your offering company wont be calling you before 6 or 8 months after degree gets over.. in that time, you would have lost a lot of money, if sitting idle... So better get into a job which is offering a smaller package even, and start working.. Good thing, would be that in a year or two, you would be in a situation to switch, with work experience in hand .. the money matter will anyways get balanced, as u worked for around 8 more months and did not sit idle..
There are things which should be clear.. A lot of friends in college think about doing certifications (Microsoft, Sun, Oracle etc. etc.).. Take this granted, when u r going to these big companies, nobody is gonna see your certifications ("unless u r very lucky") while allocating u the stream (the platform on which u get trained like .NET, Java, Oracle , Mainframes etc.), and same would be the case while giving you the domain... So, its best to wait till you join the company and finish the initial training.. Once you get ur stream, and domain u can go for certifications according to the need at that time.. The good part is - you would get reimbursement for the certification fee also.. :)
This fact differs for those, who are gonna look for job now.. In their case, they can do some certification, and include that in their resume.. this could help a bit in the interviews; but take for sure it would never be the deciding factor in recruitment.. The reason is -- decreasing credibility and value of the certifications, as nowadays getting it is quite easy, by reading "dumps" etc...
PEOPLE WITHOUT ANY JOB IN HAND
Here, the case is a bit bad, but don't worry.. There is a saying - "Nobody can prevent you from getting what you should actually get." There would be some struggle after the college days and it would be tougher, particularly in this recession time... The best step for these people would be to find contacts in the industry, who are known to you somehow (relatives, friends, seniors or anything else).. They might sometime help you to get into a job, even if it is a contract one (its better than nothing).. the situation is really bad guys out here.. Companies are conducting off-campus even nowadays; but they would choose 5 out of 100 or 500.. Most important is to shift to a big city (you decide which one, but don keep sitting at home and say that I'm trying for job)... Some of the tips for finding jobs & interviews are in this post...
You can also go for some popular certifications from Microsoft, Sun etc.. as they are always in demand..
Important points to keep in mind ---
1. Don't join courses in institutes like APTECH, NIIT, CSC etc. just because you have to spend time. Your degree matters a lot more than their certificates..
2. Don't fall for the HR consultant companies which ask u for paying money and then getting u job. They are just liars and nothing else, making out money from innocent freshers..
3. Don't go for companies which say to work for 6 months or so, without any salary. Any decent company wont say that .. But there are people out there ready to exploit u ...
4. If you are not able to get into a permanent job, there are contract jobs available in big companies. These jobs would be there for a period of year, or sometime near that.. You can go for that, as they pay you in a decent way, and also u get a good name and experience .. Some of the good HR consultancies which i know dealing with big companies are TalentPro & Vault .. These HR firms don't take money from you, rather they get it from the company, where u get into.. So, you are out of any tension regarding that money matters ..
I hope this post helps u all who are looking for answers about entering the IT industry.. Comments are welcome. I would try to answer them as soon as possible (in the best way !!)

ReplyDeleteGood effort. Mayank is not writing this blog. His experience writes. Guys! I'm a victim of this recession.Placed in Keane, stillllllll waiting for my joining,as I didn't get better offers than Keane so far. I was working with a BPO but the thing is I totally forgot the technology I have learnt in engg. It's really worthless in working with BPO's(for engg. guys), You can make money and u'll lose ur health and it will not at all help u if ur passion is IT... Guys, plan!!! Openings are there.. But very less in number! Try to get in touch with any sound person in IT Industry and get some reference coz, only with internal reference, recruitment is going on.........
